ChatGPT, the most powerful AI language model ever developed, can generate natural-sounding text on demand, including in a specific style or several languages, in just a few seconds. The quality of the copy it produces is sufficient to impress secondary and higher education teachers and even researchers.
Language plays a central role in how we communicate, learn and teach, organize and take political action, and convey the emotions and complexities of our lives. AI language models, which derive their power from colossal amounts of language data, epitomize the broader paradigm shift toward foundation models. These models use and can adapt to an impressively wide range of tasks.
AI language models in more than fifty years
The concept of artificial intelligence has long been a fascination for intellectuals. Since the 1950s, scientists have attempted to develop computer systems that approximate human thought and behaviour. In the mid-1960s, they released the first computer systems that claimed the title of artificial intelligence. Some even referred to these early attempts as ‘human-level AI.’ However, it would be another five decades before this research culminated in sophisticated computer programs.
A major controversy erupted when they used AI to create plagiarized articles. In 2014, a study showed that algorithms could easily plagiarize essays from the Internet. Even though the samples were limited to English, the results were alarming. Many people also criticized the way AI is used to create fake article content. According to some experts, AI-programmed articles tended to be insincere and full of advertising keywords.
Is AI-Language Model a threat to Education?
Again we faced controversy after releasing the new ChatGPT in November 2022. On the web for OpenAI, we can read that usage of ChatGPT is free during the research preview.
ChatGPT is a cutting-edge AI chatbot technology that uses natural language processing and machine learning to enable users to interact with a virtual assistant. OpenAI developed ChatGPT to be highly intelligent and intuitive, with the ability to understand and respond to complex requests in a natural and human-like way. With its advanced capabilities, ChatGPT is revolutionizing how we interact with technology and paving the way for a new era of intelligent, conversational AI. [1]
In Norway, a student tested the ChatGPT for her thesis. When she got the marks, she was surprised. The grade from the commission was very good. The student brought her story to the newspapers. Her story created many discussions about exams. We can read both pros and cons of using AI as a tool for students’ homework and exams.
The use of AI tools in writing has sparked an outcry worldwide. In the United States, public schools in New York and Seattle have decided to block ChatGPT from their devices and WiFi networks. In France, the prestigious Sciences Po university in Paris has just announced a strict ban on its use. [2]
AI-Language Model is useful for Education.
A study published in 2020 investigated the impact of a chatbot-based micro-learning system on students’ learning motivation and performance. The study used a quasi-experiment with 99 first-year students taking part in a basic computer course on number system conversion. They divided the students into a traditional learning group and a chatbot-based micro-learning group. After the experiment, both groups achieved a comparable performance, suggesting that students are sufficiently competent to learn independently in the chatbot-based learning environment without needing continuous face-to-face delivery. Moreover, students in the chatbot learning group attained significantly higher intrinsic motivation than the traditional learning group, with perceived choice and perceived value as core predictors of intrinsic motivation. Communication between humans and AI is crucial to creating truly intelligent systems. Current technologies allow us to communicate with machines using machine code, binary language and ordinary language. Natural language makes it easy to develop meaningful relationships between humans and AI. Using natural language frees up human and machine resources, allowing them to focus on more important tasks.
The AI-Language Model is an exciting development platform that will make communication between humans and AI much easier. It’s currently in its early stages of development but seems promising due to its versatility. Presently the AI-Language Model is already used in many different ways. Shortly, educators will become a big user group.
AI Language Model for Educators
AI-Language Model will give new opportunities in Education worldwide. AI has tremendous potential for intellectual and commercial endeavours. By allowing humans and computers to work together, we’re paving the way for smarter products, services, and school training that humankind needs in the future.
